Looking after your skin during pregnancy

Hello and welcome to the world of skin.

I have been in the beauty industry now for nearly 13 years and I specialise in skincare. I see all sorts of skin types and skin care regimes so nothing here fazes me. In this article I will be giving you recommendations on how to look after your skin in the first trimester of pregnancy and the last. (the middle part is when your skin will look its best). It doesn’t matter the budget, as these small steps can fit any. I have put together the most basic of routines so it shouldn’t be a chore.

Firstly, bin the wipes and the soap! This will dry your skin out. Dry and dehydrated skin is the biggest cause of aging! Use a face wash (easy to use in the bath or shower) or micellar water (your facewipe in a bottle). This helps combat those pesky hormonal spots in the first few months without dehydrating the skin.

Great! now your skin is nice and clean you need to hydrate your skin you can do this in two components, half is your water intake and the second is using a moisturiser. Not just any moisturiser though. It needs to be one that suits your skin type. On most tubs, tubes or pots of cream it will say what skin type its for. Dry skin, dehydrated/aging, oily and oily to combination. It is important you use the correct one for you as it can cause the opposite effect of what you are looking for. You will need to do this AM/PM.

Once you have been using these for just a few days you will notice your skin changing but for the better. You can easily add in a serum to boost your moisturisers effect by up to 30%. Exfoliate 1-2 times per week to remove dead skin cells and use a mask once a week for a luxurious treat for your skin, but remember it has to suit your skin type. If you are unsure on your skin type most salons give a complimentary skin consultation to tell you.

Did you know not taking your makeup off at night causes you to age 7x faster and takes a professional facial to get your skin back to where it was. Facials are a really nice thing to have done especially in the last trimester when the skin can start look a little sluggish and dull. Book in with your local therapist, most offer pregnancy packages.

If this treat isn’t in your budget that’s fine just take 45 mins out at home and incorporate it with a relaxing bath and a cucumber eye mask! Again, it doesn’t matter what brand you are using it just has to suit our skin type. Good luck with your skin and with your babies.
